Catholic School Teacher Reportedly Fired After Being Outed As Gay

A Catholic school teacher in Chicago says he was fired from his job after his students discovered he is gay and outed him.

According to DNAInfo, students at St. Ignatius College Prep, where Matt Tedeschi was formerly a religious studies teacher, found out he was gay and spread the information around the school. Students reportedly harassed Matt both in the classroom and on social media as a result of his sexual orientation becoming public. Nearly a year after he was outed, Matt says he was fired, which DNAInfo reports he thinks was because he is gay.

“In this place that prides itself on being a value-based school and teaches us to care for the vulnerable and marginalized, it’s precisely the same religious basis that allows horrible harassment to take place,” he said,

Matt thinks he was fired because being gay conflicts with some teachings of the Catholic Church, though the Pope said last year the church should apologize to gay people for having marginalized them. St. Ignatius has denied Matt was fired for his sexual orientation, adding that he was “treated fairly at all times by the administration of the school, and we wish him all the best in his future career.”

DNAInfo reports Matt was outed when a student came across his OKCupid profile in February, 2016, which indicates he’s interested in men. The student reportedly took a screen shot of his profile and spread it around the school via text message. Harassment continued this school year, DNAInfo reports, and this spring the school reportedly told Matt they would not renew his contract.

“He ‘outed’ me to a bunch of students. He knew that he was making fun of me and insulting me,” Matt said. “He wanted to embarrass me.”

While being gay is nothing to be ashamed about, it’s not ok that someone spread that information without Matt’s permission because coming out should always be a personal choice. While coming out can be a positive, freeing experience for some people, others are afraid of discrimination or backlash because of their sexuality.
