Donald Trump Called the Former FBI Director a “Nutjob”
The day after President Donald Trump unceremoniously fired FBI director James Comey, he vented about his tough week to Russian officials.
“I just fired the head of the F.B.I. He was crazy, a real nut job,” Mr. Trump said, according to a New York Times report published Friday. “I faced great pressure because of. That’s taken off.”

Comey had been leading the investigation into the Trump campaign’s possible collusion with Russian meddling in the 2016 election. Though the White House has given other explanations for why Comey was fired, this latest news adds to the case that Trump got rid of Comey because of the investigation. (Trump himself eloquently told NBC last week that he considered “this Russia thing” before he fired Comey.)
Trump met with the Russian foreign minister and ambassador in the Oval Office on May 10, the day after he ousted Comey. In what must have been a very thrilling get-together for the Russians, the president also gave up highly classified intelligence that he was not permitted to share. Though a Russian state news agency photographed the meeting, no American press were allowed into the room.
Crucially, White House press secretary Sean Spicer did not deny Trump’s Oval Office blabbering, though he tried to explain it away and shift the blame to those damn leakers. “By grandstanding and politicizing the investigation into Russia’s actions, James Comey created unnecessary pressure on our ability to engage and negotiate with Russia,” Spicer said. “The investigation would have always continued, and obviously, the termination of Comey would not have ended it. Once again, the real story is that our national security has been undermined by the leaking of private and highly classified conversations.”
