The “Black-ish” Spin-Off “College-ish” Is Official
It’s official: Black-ish is getting a spin-off, and the show is going to focus on the one and only Zoey, played by Yara Shahidi. After several years on the ABC hit, the eldest daughter will be heading off to college, and now we’ll be able to go along for the ride.
The Hollywood Reporter reports that the show is officially going to happen on Freeform, with a 13-episode order. The show will aptly be named College-ish with Yara starring and Black-ish over on ABC continuing without the 17-year-old star. Her character Zoey will get a send-off on the original show sometime next season.
Actor Deon Cole has also been confirmed for the new show, though he will continue to appear on both series simultaneously. He was originally introduced as Charlie, a co-worker of Zoey’s dad Andre. He’ll be playing an adjunct marketing professor in the spin-off.
The show will be a “contemporary take on the current issues facing students and administrators in the world of higher education,” according to THR. The rest of the characters have yet to be cast. Though the show was originally developed for ABC, which is the network that currently airs Black-ish, sources claim that the pilot “skewed too young,” so Freeform took the new series under its wing.
Kenya Barris, the creator of both projects, is thrilled to be able to continue the storylines of her now-famous characters. He told THR, “I never thought they’d let me put Black-ish on the air let alone give me a spinoff. I couldn’t be more excited for the opportunity to continue working with Yara and the rest of this talented young cast.” He continued, “To any aspiring writers struggling to make it out there, I highly advise adding an ‘–ish’ to any working title you might have. It seems to be the move.”
College-ish will premiere in early 2018, but an exact date to tune in has yet to be set.
