Little Girl Wish For ‘Dream’ Wedding Before Life-Threatening Surgery – Parents Know Just What To Do

Is there anything more innocent and sweet than childhood love?

We all remember our first love and when we fell for them way back on the playground in kindergarten.

5-year-old Sophia Elyssa Chiappalone and 6-year-old Hunter Laferriere are best friends and they’re also married to each other.

Little Sophia, with a perfect smile that could light up a room, has had two open heart surgeries already in her short life. When she was born, her parents thought they were having a healthy little girl, but right from the start, there were complications.

“First, the umbilical cord had fused into the placenta during the pregnancy and if my water had broken before reaching the hospital, I would have bled out and we both would have died. But this miraculously did not happen,” Sophia’s mom, Kristy, wrote on her Facebook page.

When Sophia was transferred to the NICU after her birth, her oxygen saturation levels dropped. After a round of tests, it was discovered that she had a genetic heart defect, called Tetralogy of Fallot with Pulmonary Atresia. She also had a Ventricular Septum Defect.

Since then, Sophia has gone to many doctors appointments. She’s had two open heart surgeries and 11 Cardiac catheterizations.

Sophia has a third open heart surgery scheduled for January 2018 and before she goes in for the risky surgery, she had a big wish. She wanted to marry her best friend, Hunter.

The two met each other when they were in preschool. Hunter was more than happy to marry his best friend.

Hunter’s mom shared the photo shoot with Love What Matters and wrote a heartfelt message about the adorable pictures.

“My 6 year-old son’s best friend and ‘girlfriend’ was asked her wish before going into her third risky, open-heart surgery—it was to marry my son. At preschool graduation in May he insisted we buy her a dozen red roses—they had to be red, her favorite color. So, I knew he’d agree to dress up and have a mock wedding shoot for her; and he did. ‘Anything to make Sophia happy, Mommy.’ Just like that, magic happened! My best friend, Marisa, captured the innocent adoration these two kids have for each other on the perfect day with the right light, Sophia in a beautiful dress as they smiled, laughed and played. Sophia may have half a heart, but she overflows the hearts of those around her with joy.”

The wedding took place on Oct. 23, where Sophia and Hunter met on a playground to exchange their “vows” while photographer Marisa Balletti-Lavoie of Sassy Mouth Photo snapped pictures the whole time.

Kristy was overwhelmed by all of the support that Sophia has gotten since the wedding photo shoot was shared online. She posted a note of thanks on her Facebook page.

“It was pure innocence in the purest form. My heart aches with joy with the people standing behind Supergirl on this fight. She’s fought to be alive since her first breath, but that’s all she knows. I love the idea of sharing the beautiful story that is her and Hunter. Most people wait a lifetime for someone who wouldn’t stand by them through such illness. She met a best friend and love of her life at 3 who does. You know they say marry your best friend, it just doesn’t usually happen before 1st grade!!! I agree, the world should know this story.”
