The 91-year-old Queen of the United Kingdom and the 96-year-old Duke of Edinburgh just celebrated their 70 years of bliss in November. They met as teenagers when they were 13 and 18 respectively, with Elizabeth, according to her own confession, falling in love at first sight.

Even though they spent their early lives in the same social circles, their romance didn’t spark until she visited the Royal Naval College in Greenwich, London with her parents and met up with Philip who gave them a tour of the college.

Just after Philip returned from serving in the Royal Army during World War II, he and the princess announced their engagement. Four months after the engagement, Philip and Princess Elizabeth got married.

Today we issue our stamps to commemorate the 70th Wedding Anniversary of HM the Queen and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh.

On November the 20th, 1947, the then Princess Elizabeth stood at the altar preparing to wed Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten. The event took place at Westminster Abbey and was attended by 2,000 guests with the wedding being quite an elaborate ceremony.

Then-Princess Elizabeth was escorted to the abbey by her father, King George VI. Prince Philip waited for her wearing his Naval Officer’s uniform while she wore an ivory silk gown adorned with 10,000 seed pearls, crystals, and a 13-foot-long train. Her wedding ring was made from a nugget of Welsh gold.

I am very honoured to have been commissioned to photograph Her Majesty The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh for their 70th wedding anniversary. I would like to congratulate Her Majesty and His Royal Highness on their landmark achievement. I would also like to thank @camerapress_photography, Sally Osman and Angela Kelly for giving me this opportunity. ⠀ ⠀ #queenelizabeth #70thanniversary #buckinghampalace #windsorcastle #mattholyoak #royalfamily #dukeofediburgh #platinumanniversary #princephillip ⠀⠀ Photo © Matt Holyoak / Camera Press
