9 Famous Beaches That Look Disappointing In Real Life

How many times have we been duped by what we have seen on the Internet? Countless. How annoying is it when after days, weeks even, of deliberation, of browsing travel brochures, of reading up on the best and most convenient tourist locations, and especially after falling in love with the breathtaking photograph of a sunset beach, you finally come to a decision about where you want to spend your holiday, and when you get there it’s nothing like what you expected?

Argh, the pain is excruciating! You feel completely betrayed! You even start doubting you will ever be able to trust again. Well, we know the feeling. Which is why we would like to spare you the same suffering. Here are 9 famous beaches that, on paper, look absolutely stunning, but that may break your heart with disappointment when you meet them in person. Kudos to the Insider for compiling this list.

1. Waikiki Beach in Hawaii, United States

It looks stunning when it’s all empty and lit up at night.

But, during the day, the beach is so jam-packed there’s hardly room to breathe, let alone to spend a pleasant day at the seaside.

2. Bondi Beach, Sydney, Australia

The beach is surrounded by beautiful, lush, green grass.

But expect the unexpected: you can find it populated by a bunch of rowdy Santas.

3. Huntington Beach, California, United States

This is one of the most iconic beaches, famous for its elevated boardwalk featured in many a spectacular photograph.

Actually it depends on you look at it. From the wrong angle, it’s not very impressive.

4. La Concha Beach, San Sebastián, Spain

It’s renowned as one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe.

But the weather is not always perfect, and when it’s cloudy, the shore looks downright miserable.

5. Clearwater Beach, Florida, United States

In the photographs, the beach appears to be a perfectly manicured sandy oasis.

In real life, it’s not manicured at all thanks to the throngs of daily visitors.

6. El Nido Bay, Palawan, Philippines

El Nido Bay looks like heaven with its vast expanse of turquoise waters and little boats here and there.

Well, the boats are certainly there, but the colour of the water isn’t always so attractive.

7. Deauville Beach, Normandy, France

This beach is a very popular tourist spot and it’s perfectly easy to see why: it seems to be taken straight out of a French painting.

The place looks not quite so charming in winter with all those umbrellas closed.

8. Playa Norte, Isla Mujeres, Mexico

Ah, sitting in the shade of a palm tree gently swaying in the light breeze…

…would be absolutely amazing! Unfortunately, it’s very unlikely you will manage to find an unoccupied spot on the beach.

9. Harbour Island, Bahamas

One thing the beaches on this island are famous for is their pink sand.

Yes, the sand really is pink. In the photos. In reality, not so much.
