Celebs who embrace their natural beauty

Celebs who embrace their natural beauty

Female celebrities, be they actresses, singers, or models, are pressured into all kinds of beauty regimens and body modifications, from plastic surgery to extreme diets to wearing makeup every single day. Hollywood beauty standards are near unattainable, and the second you turn 30 or gain five pounds, you’re the subject of scrutiny by the public and the paparazzi alike. So it’s no surprise that a lot of famous women toe the line, getting face lifts, dyeing their hair, and never leaving the house without a face full of make-up.

And while I’m indeed sympathetic, the real heroines of Hollywood are the ones that defy convention, sporting their natural hair, eschewing plastic surgery, and wearing minimal makeup. Without further ado, here’s a list of celebs who embrace their natural beauty.

    Demi Lovato

The pressure for all women to be thin is overwhelming in contemporary American society. For famous women, it’s even more intense, so it’s not surprising that a lot of them wind up with eating disorders. Demi Lovato did, and suffered for a long time feeling like her body wasn’t good enough the way it is. But since she sought treatment and worked on her recovery, the singer says she’s happier than ever.

She told Allure that she’s “never felt as confident in my skin as I do today. A year ago, on tour, almost every inch of my body was covered by clothing, and it was because I was hiding behind so many layers. Once I started feeling better about myself, I felt better about showing more skin.”

Speaking of skin, Lovato is happiest when she’s in the buff. She told People magazine, “I feel the most beautiful when I’m naked. Just completely stripped down, completely organic, me. That’s when I feel the most confident, because that’s the most natural state that I could possibly get in.” Lovato also likes to go without makeup, and spearheads a social media campaign called No Makeup Mondays, wherein she celebrates her natural beauty.

    Laverne Cox

While all female celebrities deal with the enormous pressure to be attractive, trans women often have to deal with the added pressure of trans visibility; heteronormative beauty standards favor and promote cisgender appearances. But Laverne Cox, who is openly transgender, knew she was never going to be read as cisgender.

She told Cosmopolitan magazine, “I was never that trans person who was going to walk down the street and not be recognized as trans, so I had to either own it or kill myself. I have to own who I am.” And own it she does, knowing that one of the main reasons she is so attractive is because she is visibly transgender. She continued, “I realized that trans people, a lot of us, just look different. We don’t all just look like non-trans people. And that’s OK. It’s not only OK, it’s beautiful.”

And while Cox is usually dressed to the nines and perfectly made up, she’s not afraid to go without makeup and show her natural hair on Instagram, where she has 2.5 million followers. She also started the #transisbeautiful campaign, which celebrates the beauty of transgender people everywhere.

    Lady Gaga

Musician Lady Gaga is known for her over-the-top costumes, her bold and bedazzled makeup looks, and her ever-changing hair colors and styles. But in spite of the fact that she’s mega-famous and can rock the smallest bikinis, she doesn’t consider herself conventionally attractive.

She told Glamour magazine, “If there was some sort of mathematical equation for beauty, I don’t know if I would be the algorithm. I’ve always been OK with that. I’m not a supermodel. That’s not what I do.” So she’s totally chill about it. “I’m confident in who I am,” she said. “I’ve come to a place in my life where I’ve accepted things that are me, as opposed to feeling pressure to explain myself to people around me.”

Gaga has shown the world before that she’s comfortable in her own skin, when she responded to body shamers with a stripped down picture of her au natural. She also revealed that she struggled with eating disorders, and invited her fans to share in their natural beauty together and without shame. Finally, she’s been posting no-makeup selfies on social media for years now, showing her naturally beautiful face to her millions of devotees.

    Salma Hayek

Salma Hayek was the image of perfection for us 1990s kids, gracing the screen in movies like Desperado and From Dusk Till Dawn. And for a Latina like me, it was pivotal to see representation on screen; who else could we trust to portray the magnificent Frida Kahlo on screen back in 2002?

Hayek is still landing roles because of her beauty and talent. And in her 50th year, she has had some wisdom about aging in Hollywood. In an interview with The New York Times, she talked about how great it felt to do a movie where she was not pressured to adhere to conventional standards.

“It relaxed me, gave me a sense of freedom because you don’t have to make any effort. Do you realize how wonderful that is — that for once you’re not supposed to look this way or the other?” And the future is bright insofar as Hayek is concerned. “I realized that the best roles for women are going to come in my 40s because it’s when a woman has the most richness and experience and wisdom, and also challenges that are more profound.” And she’s not looking back. “If you told me today there’s a magic potion that can take you back to 25, I would never take it. Because I like me better now. And I’m actually curious to find out who I’m going to be next.”

    Danai Gurira

Black is beautiful, and you need not look beyond Danai Gurira to know it in your heart and soul. Gurira is most well-known for her work as Michonne in The Walking Dead, wherein she wields a samurai sword like a professional, and sports long, flowing locks. And while her hair on the show is a wig, she wears her hair naturally in real life — currently bald for one of her roles — which shows us how confident she is in her elegant, innate beauty.

She told People, “One day I had to wear a wig cap, and I said, ‘That kind of works.’ As soon as I could, I cut it all off, and I haven’t looked back since.” As for her beauty must-haves, she’s not one for excess. All she needs is, “A good pair of earrings and a lip gloss. I’m bald, so the earrings always make me feel like, ‘Okay, I’m popping.'”

Not only is Gurira an actress, but she’s also a prolific playwright. In fact, her work has been nominated for multiple Tony Awards. Additionally, her most recent show, Eclipsed, made Broadway history as the first play to have an all-black cast, writer, and director. She told Harper’s Bazaar that her work creates “opportunities through my story-telling for people of African descent. It’s something I’ve constantly found shocking—all this astounding talent amongst black woman that never gets to be seen or heard.” Way to embrace and promote black beauty!

    Kate Winslet

Kate Winslet is an extremely accomplished actress who skyrocketed to stardom in 1997 when she played the role of Rose in the movie Titanic. Fast forward twenty years to 2017, and she’s still landing choice roles and thriving in her career. Winslet will turn 42 in October 2017, and is embracing her agein the same manner that she’s always embraced her figure.

She told The Telegraph that she would never consider going under the knife to alter her appearance. “It goes against my morals, the way that my parents brought me up and what I consider to be natural beauty,” she said. “I will never give in.” Additionally, if she did undergo surgery, it would hamper her career. She continued, “I am an actress, I don’t want to freeze the expression of my face.”

And the heroine that she is, she’s passing on body positive wisdom to her daughter. On an episode of Running Wild with Bear Grylls, she stated, “I stand in front of the mirror and say to Mia, ‘We are so lucky we have a shape. We’re so lucky we’re curvy. We’re so lucky that we’ve got good bums.’ And she’ll say, ‘Mummy, I know, thank God.’ It’s paying off.” Thanks, Kate.

    Zoe Kravitz

Zoë Kravitz has cemented her place in film and television, starring in a variety of films from Mad Max: Fury Road to the Divergent movies. And she looks good doing it, with her lithe frame, smoldering eyes, and fresh faced complexion. Kravitz is biracial, which makes her stand out in a less than diverse Hollywood, but she has come to embrace her heritage.

She told C magazine, “I think there was a point when I resisted being categorized. I got past that and started to really dig deeper and learn more about my roots. I identify as everything, and am proud and connected to the rich history that I come from.” That pride is evident in the way she wears her hair: naturally. When she sports braids, for example, she’s aware of the impact. She continued, “They aren’t some symbolic thing, but it still feels important, I think, to be a brown girl with natural hair. You see [blonde] girls with the same hair in every movie.”

Kravitz, although she has an impressive beauty regimen, is also something of a minimalist when it comes to what she wears on her face. She told The New York Times, “Day to day, I don’t wear a lot of makeup.” She does wear some, but it’s clear that she doesn’t need to, and she knows it.

    Ashley Graham

In a society that constantly touts thin as the apex of beauty, it’s rare to see larger, more diverse bodies featured in the mainstream. But in 2016, the stunning Ashley Graham not only graced the pages of the famous Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, she also landed the cover. And as Graham told CNN at the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards, being confident about her natural body was what got her there.

“I started to claim confidence in my cellulite and my back fat and my cellulite on my arms. That’s how you get on the cover of Sports Illustrated.” For Graham, it’s important to cultivate self-confidence because no matter what, people will always find something wrong about your appearance. She continued, that people say “I’m too big. I’m too small. I’m too pretty. I’m too ugly. And I think at the end of the day, no woman is ever going to be good enough for society. So why not just start embracing what is the difference in you and saying that is beautiful?”

On top of the fierce body acceptance, Graham isn’t afraid to go makeup free on her Instagram once in a while, too. What a babe.

    Alicia Keys

Alicia Keys is a force of nature. The singer-songwriter has been awarded a total of 15 Grammy Awards, and it’s highly likely that there will be more in the future. She’s also a songwriter, an actress, and an activist, so there’s seemingly no end to her talents.

More recently, Keys has been interrogating the beauty standards that celebrity women are held to, and has decided to do something about it. In an editorial on Lenny, she opened up about it, saying, “Every time I left the house, I would be worried if I didn’t put on makeup: What if someone wanted a picture?? What if they POSTED it??? These were the insecure, superficial, but honest thoughts I was thinking. And all of it, one way or another, was based too much on what other people thought of me.” Then, after a bare-faced photo shoot with a photographer, she began to see how beautiful she was without makeup, in all of her natural glory. And the shoot was magic. “I swear it is the strongest, most empowered, most free, and most honestly beautiful that I have ever felt,” she wrote, reflecting on the feeling.

Keys won’t be kowtowing to anyone ever again. She wrote, “‘Cause I don’t want to cover up anymore. Not my face, not my mind, not my soul, not my thoughts, not my dreams, not my struggles, not my emotional growth. Nothing.” And we’re ready for this revolution.

    Mariska Hargitay

Law & Order: SVU has been on the air for a long time now — since 1999, in fact. And all along the way, now-Lieutenant Olivia Benson has been on the case, locking up bad dudes and making the world safer for women and children. The real life Mariska Hargitay is equally as wonderful, as she’s the founder and president of the Joyful Heart Foundation, which helps victims of sexual assault.

Hargitay is the daughter of bombshell Jayne Mansfield and dreamboat Mickey Hargitay, so it’s no surprise that she’s naturally gorgeous — after nearly 20 years on television, you can see how she has aged like a fine wine. And she’s proud of her body, as she told Ladies Home Journal (via People magazine), “I love my curves because they scream, ‘I’m a mama!’ I’m the girl who started wearing maternity pants about an hour after I found out I was pregnant because I was so excited about becoming a mom.”

And she wants other women to feel the same. “I don’t think women should label themselves based on the way they look,” she continued. “What about defining yourself by a different kind of measurement? What about your heart, your soul, your compassion, your generosity, your strength, and your power? There are so many other things to focus on besides your waistline.” That’s beauty, inside and out.

    Embrace your own natural beauty

With so many gorgeous celebrities saying no to the knife and letting their natural looks shine, it sends a message to women everywhere that you don’t have to alter yourself to be attractive. It also empowers women, as we’re not so bound to what one small group of people — producers and power players in Hollywood — dictate as beautiful.

And while most of us aren’t blessed with the flawless beauty that Demi Lovato or Zoë Kravitz are, we can still be liberated by their bold decision to buck oppressive beauty trends. So whether it’s ditching the makeup or wearing your hair naturally, just being you is more beautiful than ever.

Marvel’s The Defenders may never get a second season

If two’s company and three’s a crowd, it looks like the four heroes at the center of Marvel’s The Defenders are a swarm. According to Marvel Television head Jeph Loeb, the Defenders may never team up again for another season of the character-packed Netflix series.

Speaking with Collider in an interview at San Diego Comic-Con this past weekend, Loeb admitted his doubts about a second season of The Defenders. When asked about the possibility of the heroes reuniting to save New York another time, he replied, “I don’t know. We haven’t really gotten to that place. I don’t know that there will be a Defenders 2.”

But it wasn’t all bad news from Loeb. The Marvel head honcho reassured fans that Jessica Jones season 2 is currently filming in the Big Apple, as is the second season of Luke Cage, and that there will undoubtedly be a third season of the Charlie Cox-led Daredevil. As far as everything else is concerned, “we’ll see where it goes,” Loeb said.

The forthcoming eight-episode season of The Defenders brings together Krysten Ritter’s Jessica Jones, Mike Colter’s Luke Cage, Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock/Daredevil, and Finn Jones’ Danny Rand/Iron Fist in a culmination of the four individual series’ stories that have played out on the small screen in the past few years.

Given that the purpose of The Defenders (to finally unite the superheroes and bridge the gaps between them) seems it could be fulfilled in just one season, it’s understandable that Loeb is unsure about another team-up down the line. Perhaps the Marvel TV world will stick to occasional crossovers between series once The Defenders wraps.

As Loeb mentioned, we’ll simply have to see what the future holds.

We can look forward to The Defenders premiering on Netflix on August 18, and in the meantime, read up on the untold truth of the superhero group.

Kate Middleton and Princess Charlotte's best style moments

Kate Middleton and Princess Charlotte’s best style moments

On May 2, 2015, a new member joined the royal family, and the world was instantly smitten. Princess Charlotte of Cambridge has been a celebrity since the day she was born, and today, is one of the coolest toddlers around.

Following after her mom, Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, Charlotte has fabulous style. And as a pair, this mother and daughter are unstoppable. So let’s take a look at the last two years of best style moments from the royal mother and daughter.

    Fashionable since the first day

Being royalty, Princess Charlotte was introduced to the public right away. Middleton and her husband, Prince William, showed off their newborn daughter to world just 10 hours after she was born, according to E! News. Middleton stunned in a Jenny Packham yellow print dress, and (impressively!) nude heels, not showing any signs of just having given birth. She held her new baby girl, dressed in white, for the big reveal.

It was a happy day for the whole family, as a statement was released from Kensington Palace (via People). It read, “The Duke and Duchess are hugely grateful for the messages of congratulations they have received from people all over the world…It means a great deal to them that so many people have celebrated the arrival of their new daughter.”

    In their Sunday best

In July of 2015, the world was able to see Princess Charlotte again for a very big day: her christening. Both she and her mom were dressed in white for the big moment, which took place at St. Mary Magdalene church in Sandringham. According to The Huffington Post, many members from the royal family, including Queen Elizabeth II, were in attendance.

Middleton shined in an Alexander McQueen coat dress, topped with an elegant hat by Jane Taylor. Mom and daughter looked perfect for the celebration.

    Living that snow bunny life

The royal family managed to find some time for a family trip in early 2016. In March of that year, they unveiled pictures from their time away skiing in the French Alps. Managing to keep the news away from the press, Prince William and Middleton were able to take their 2-year-old son Prince George and 10-month-old Princess Charlotte on vacation. During the trip, the family dressed for the weather, staying warm in their ski gear.

Middleton looked fabulous as always, wearing a white E+O ski jacket, adding a pop of color with red ski pants. Middleton has been known for recycling her looks over time, and that is just the case with this outfit. According to The Telegraph, the Duchess of Cambridge rocked this same look on ski trips in 2008 and 2010.

Princess Charlotte had a similar look, in a John Lewis snowsuit and perfectly pink hat and boots. As a spokesman from Kensington Palace shared (via The Telegraph), “This was their first holiday as a family of four and the first time either of the children had played in the snow…It was a very special and fun short holiday for the family.”

Mother daughter matching at its finest

June of 2016 included another big celebration for the royal family. They all came together to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s 90th birthday, which included the British tradition of a parade and the Royal Airforce flyover, as reported by Today. Both Middleton and Princess Charlotte looked ready for summer, both wearing white and light pinks.

Yet again, Middleton showed that re-wearing is the way to go. According to People, Middleton wore the same Alexander McQueen white coat dress that she did at Princess Charlotte’s christening. This time she swapped out hats, choosing a light pink Philip Treacy option and pearl earrings, transforming it into a brand new outfit. Princess Charlotte followed suit, adorably dressed in a light pink dress, with matching shoes and hair barrette.

    Traveling in style

This mother-daughter duo have equally fabulous style abroad, too.

During their royal tour of Canada in September 2016, the family of four visited for eight days. The royals made quite the entrance when they first arrived in Victoria, British Columbia. As reported by ABC News, Middleton stunned in a bright blue Jenny Packham dress. Princess Charlotte made an excellent impression on her first royal tour, opting for a lighter blue dress, with matching blue bow for her hair.

Prince William shared (via ABC News), “The warm welcome that you gave us at that important moment in our lives meant a lot to us — and we have never forgotten it. That is why we are so pleased that George and Charlotte can be with us in Canada this time round, beginning their own lifetime of friendship with this wonderful country.”

    Still classy while playing around

The royal tour of Canada included a variety of experiences for the little ones. During a tea party, Princess Charlotte enjoyed balloons, petting animals, and other activities. She wore another light blue dress, but this one included bright pink accessories, from the buttons to the bow. As Vanity Fair reported, the Duchess went for a See by Chloé eyelet white dress.

Charlotte shined during her debut trip

To end the royal tour, both Middleton and Princess Charlotte pulled out all the stops with their stylish looks, as reported by Vanity Fair. While Middleton went with a simple, classic look, wearing a Catherine Walker white coat and nude LK Bennett shoes, Princess Charlotte added a pop of color with a crimson cardigan and shoes to go with her dress.

    Ready for a wedding

Now 2 years old, Princess Charlotte had a big part in her aunt’s wedding. Pippa Middleton was married at St. Mark’s Chapel in Englefield, England in May 2017, as reported by People. The princess had a big role as one of Pippa’s flower girls. She looked the part, with white dress, dusty rose-colored ribbon, and complete with the perfect flower crown.

The Duchess of Cambridge took a note from her daughter’s look, wearing the same dusty rose color for her ensemble. For the make of her dress, Middleton showed off her favorite designers’ looks yet again. As shared by Glamour, her dress was Alexander McQueen while her fascinator was designed by Jane Taylor. She topped off the elegant look with earrings by Kiki McDonough.

    Pretty in pink

Middleton and Princess Charlotte looked positively pretty in pink in June of 2017 for another year of celebrating Queen Elizabeth II’s birthday with the Trooping the Colour parade, as reported by The Telegraph.

With another appearance on the famed balcony, the mother-daughter duo showed how impressively they can coordinate. As Elle reported, Princess Charlotte wore a pink print dress with matching hair barrette. Her mother kept with her fabulous style, sporting an Alexander McQueen dress for the occasion, with matching fascinator. Both mother and daughter stood out, wearing fun summer colors for the big celebration.

    A perfect fashion duo

If there’s one thing that is for certain, it’s that this mother and daughter have their fashion choices down. Middleton has long been praised for her style, and it’s clear her daughter is following in her footsteps.

Still just a toddler, Princess Charlotte will have many events and looks to come. And when the Princess is around, there is a good chance that Middleton isn’t far behind. Here’s to many more years of fabulous looks from the mother-daughter duo.

Rick Famuyiwa in talks to direct Son of Shaolin

The director of Dope may finally have his next project.

After walking away from DC’s upcoming The Flash, Rick Famuyiwa is reportedly in negotiations to direct Son of Shaolin for Columbia Pictures, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Based on a graphic novel by Jay Longino and Caanan White, the movie will be a modern-day kung fu epic that combines Shaolin mythology with a group of teens. When an aspiring street artist learns that he’s the last of his bloodline, he must find a way to survive what seems to be an unstoppable killer.

Dwayne Johnson will produce with Dany Garcia (Baywatch) and Hiram Garcia (Furious 7).

It sounds like it would be a great fit for Famuyiwa, who demonstrated with the indie darling Dope that he knows how to portray teenage life with realism and wit. And considering that he was interested in an action flick like The Flash, Son of Shaolin could provide the director with just what he’s looking for.

Until we hear more, take a look at everything about a few remakes you didn’t know are being made.

Pauly D breaks up with Aubrey O’Day

The two stars have reportedly called it quits.

According to E! News, Pauly D (real name Paul DelVecchio) broke up with girlfriend Aubrey O’Day. A source told the celeb news site, “Pauly is the one that broke up with Aubrey. She was pressuring him to get a ring, and he was not there yet. They are done. He hopes to remain friends with her, [but] she is pretty upset.”

An insider told Entertainment Tonight, “Pauly did not see marriage with Aubrey in his future.”

The two celebs, who were together for a year and a half, first met on the set of Famously Single in November 2015. They were still together for the filming of the latest season of the reality TV show, which began airing in June 2017.

O’Day, 33, previously opened up about the idea of marriage to E! News, admitting that she’d love to get hitched in the near future. “I want a ring like ASAP! I think I put enough pressure for that to be going down sooner not later,” the former Danity Kane singer said. “I’m looking for something serious, and I’m ready to move to the next chapter in my life where I’m a wife and a mom and to experience other things than what I’ve been doing my entire career.”

She added, “He knows that and we made sure that’s the page we were both on in the beginning.”

At the time, Pauly D, 37, seemed happy with the future of their relationship, stating, “We’re looking forward to the next steps. She’s the one for me, so I’m looking forward to the next steps and waiting for the right moment to make all that happen.”

However, O’Day and the former Jersey Shore star may not be apart for long. As E! News notes, the two have a history of breaking up and getting back together. They split in May 2016 and again in August 2016 but reconciled just a short time after each separation.

But for right now, O’Day doesn’t appear to be missing her former other half. She took to Instagram to share a sexy photo of herself, writing, “Voices in my head sayin’ I could do better, damn.”

Guess we’ll just have to wait to find out if these two former flames are meant to be.

Sweet celebs who married terrible people

    Paul McCartney

Paul McCartney’s marriage to Heather Mills didn’t seem terrible—until they divorced. The couple was married for less than six years before finalizing the divorce in March 2008. Justice Hugh Bennett, who presided over the split, wasn’t impressed with Mills’ efforts to snag $250 million from the former Beatle.

“I am driven to the conclusion that much of her evidence, both written and oral, was not just inconsistent and inaccurate but also less than candid,” Bennett wrote in his ruling (via People), noting that her requests for $400,000 annually for private flights, $80,000 for wine, and $250,000 for clothes were “ridiculous…unreasonable, indeed exorbitant.”

As recently as March 2015, Mills was still insulting McCartney, despite being awarded $48.6 million in the divorce settlement. She told U.K.’s The Late Late Show that McCartney was irrelevant, saying “No, they’re not [interested in McCartney]…When I go down the street, I get kids coming up to me—half of them don’t even know who he is—that’s why he’s got to do songs with Rihanna and Kanye West, so people remember.” She added, “When I go down the street, it’s ‘Oh my God, you’re a ski-racer’ or ‘You help the animals.’ You know, I own the biggest vegan company in the world. This is just someone I fell in love with who to me was a normal guy that happened to write a few cool songs in the ’60s and a few in the ’70s. Like everybody that’s a partner—you fall in love, you get married, you sometimes then go, ‘Oh my God, this is completely wrong,’ you wake up, and you move on.”

Heartwarming adoption stories that will make you cry

Heartwarming adoption stories that will make you cry

One of the most emotional things a family can do is welcome a new member into their fold. It takes a lot of love, an open heart, and a willingness to change your entire life to adopt a child into your family. These couples and families opened their homes to new members of all ages, and — get your tissues ready — their stories will move you to tears.

An incredible journey to meet their son

Dennis and Carita Chen tried to conceive for nine years with no success. They realized that they had fertility issues and decided to go the adoption route. They had planned on a foreign adoption until a friend connected them with an adoption attorney whose client was looking for an Asian couple to adopt her baby.

Unfortunately for the Chens, the birth mother later decided she wanted someone from her own family to adopt her baby. But then, right after the baby was born, her other option fell through. The hospital social worker called the Chens and asked them to travel to California to take custody of the baby boy. Cautiously, the Chens made the trip from Texas, knowing that the adoption could still fall through.

“The whole trip has been closing the distance between us and our son,” Dennis said in the video, as he drove to the hospital. Carita mentioned that hundreds of people were praying for them to meet their son that night. The couple counted down the seconds until they could meet their new son, and cried when they finally saw him in the hospital.

Dennis leaned over his son, tears dripping from his eyes, and said, “It took so long to meet you. Hi Jacob. I’m your dad. You have no idea how many people have prayed for you.”

Love and fate brought them together

When Walt Manis was a kid, he had a vision of himself swinging a little girl around in his parents’ backyard, and of God telling him it would be his daughter and that her name would be Chloe. Annie, his future wife, grew up in his neighborhood and always wanted to meet someone just like him. They reconnected when Annie went to university, and she told Walt she had a name picked out for her future daughter. They were both shocked when she told him the name — Chloe.

After marrying, the couple tried for four years to have a child, without success. They became impatient and frustrated. “It was really hard,” Annie said. “I struggled with questioning God’s goodness, because I felt that it was such a mean thing to do.” Walt recounted, “Every time we would hear about someone getting pregnant, we would just be devastated. Because we were thinking this isn’t going to happen for us. We’re fools who want kids, and it’s never going to happen.”

Finally, after intense deliberation, they decided to adopt. They were elated when they got the email from the adoption agency that a birth mother chose them. When they met the birth mother, she told them that she had been thinking of a particular name throughout her pregnancy…Chloe.

Walt and Annie both burst into tears, knowing this was the baby God meant for them to have.

From trash bag to loving family

Rachel and Jim Van Eerden went on a trip to Ecuador with their two eldest kids and took a tour of an orphanage for children with special needs. While they were on the tour, Rachel saw a baby with Down Syndrome and fell in love at first sight. The baby, whom the family named Eddie, had been found by a carpenter who saw a trash bag moving next to the dumpster outside his workshop.

Even though the Van Eerdens already had ten children, they knew they were meant to adopt Eddie. The adoption took five years, but the Van Eerdens persevered. After three trips to Ecuador for court hearings, the couple finally brought him home. “We have a lot of children. And our hands are full,” Rachel said. “Why would we want to take in a child with special needs? Of course there are sacrifices, but what Eddie pours into each of us far outweighs any sacrifice.”

Rachel told the Greensboro News & Record, “He’s truly blessed our lives. He’s taught us more of what our lives are about — reaching out and loving people.”

    A very open adoption

Callie Mitchell got pregnant in her early twenties and recorded the story of her pregnancy in her journal. At first, she was excited to be pregnant. She had a loving boyfriend, and both of their families were onboard. But two months into her pregnancy, she and her boyfriend broke up, and she realized she wouldn’t be able to give her baby the life she wanted for him. It was then, that she reached out to an adoption agency, Graceful Adoptions.

Meanwhile, Kristen and Brian Doud, a couple in their early 30s, were looking to adopt a baby because they couldn’t have biological children. The Douds were willing to have an open adoption to increase their chances of getting picked. “We were open to anything,” Brian said, “Because we wanted a child.”

None of them realized how open their relationship would be. Kristen was the first person to hold baby Leo, when he was born. But Mitchell communicates with Leo every day and went to visit him for a weekend soon after he was born. Mitchell’s son is getting the opportunities she wanted him to have in life, and she still gets to be a part of his childhood.

“There’s no regrets or second thoughts,” Mitchell said. “Every part of me knows that I did the right thing.”

She asked the man who raised her to adopt her

Some of the most moving adoption stories happen when teenagers honor the people who raised them by asking to be adopted. Misty Nicole Knight asked a family member to record her, before giving Ryan Farrell a gift. She told him to read the attached note out loud.

Farrell sat down and began reading the note from Knight. “I just want you to know that you’re the most amazing man I’ve ever met. You’ve raised me my whole life, from putting my hair into tight Princess Leia buns, to forging my signature like in fifth grade, and jamming out to alternative music.” He read, “I cannot imagine not having you in my life. I’m so grateful to be able to call you Dad. You are probably wondering what this letter is for. Well, open the present already. It’s okay to cry.”

Farrell tore the paper off and opened the box, where he found a Batman versus Superman onesie in his size. He got so excited about it, he almost missed the adoption papers underneath. When he finally got to the papers, he stood up and said, “Wow, it’s a petition for adoption.” He wiped away tears as he hugged his daughter.

“God, I’ve been wanting to do that forever,” he said.

Adopting her neighbor's kids and a big surprise

Audrey asked her neighbor, Tisha Beauchmin, to watched her three kids while she went to the hospital for testing. Beauchmin agreed. Audrey then discovered she had stage 2 esophageal and stomach cancer, and asked Beauchmin to be legal guardian to her children. She passed away soon after.

Beauchmin, who grew up in an orphanage, chose to adopt her neighbor’s three children, despite already having five children of her own. Their friend, Elizabeth Thames, reached out to the FOX5 Surprise Squad to help the family of ten.

Beauchmin showed FOX5’s Cassandra Jones around her home, explaining that some of her children were sharing small rooms and others were sleeping in open living spaces. Jones told Beauchmin that they would have to add an interior wall to their home so that she could make an enclosed room for the boys — a requirement if she wanted to legally adopt the three children.

FOX5 sent the family on a three day trip and then replaced all of the carpeting, painted, landscaped, and brought in new furniture and a Christmas tree, as well as a brand new 12-seater van. “It’s really overwhelming that somebody would do this for me, for my family,” Beauchmin said. “I didn’t do anything too special. I did what anybody in my shoes would have done.”

A couple adopts a 19 year old after mentoring her

Meredith, a 19-year-old whose mother died when she was six years old, went to live with Anna and Zach Dennis soon after she graduated from high school. Anna had taught and mentored Meredith in high school, and knew that she needed support. The couple originally only planned to have her live with them for six months.

Then Zach brought the three together, telling Meredith, “I want you to know that you’re one of the most gifted and talented people I have ever seen. You’re brilliant, and you’re athletic, and you play instruments, and you speak other languages. I want you to know that you are so valuable.” He wiped the tears from his eyes before saying, “I just want you to know that we love you so much. We want this to be permanent and we want to adopt you into our family.” Meredith immediately sank into Anna’s lap, sobbing.

They hugged as Zach said, “You haven’t been loved and protected and taken care of as you should be. We are going to take care of you forever and protect you and love you. We’re always going to be here for you. We’re here to stay.”

She asked to be adopted at her graduation party

Joe Losco had been Lauren Hernandez’s unofficial dad for 17 years when she decided to make it official. Hernandez invited her family and friends to her high school graduation party in Plainfield, Illinois. At the party, she gave Losco a wrapped box, which he opened to find a picture frame with a poem inside.

He read the poem to himself, and then leaned over and hugged Hernandez. Her mom yelled, “You did it, baby!” Then he took something else out of the box — a stack of adoption papers. He immediately sank down to the ground, where he wept with emotion. Hernandez leaned down and put her arms around  him.

Hernandez told CBS2, “I never doubted that he was my dad. The fact that it’s going to be official makes me happy.” Losco said, “I’ve wanted nothing more than to be her dad from day one. Growing up, I came from a separated family. I always had it in my mind that I would never want other kids to go through that.”

They adopted four kids in 24 hours

Kaley and Jeremy Carling went to school together from elementary school through high school and began dating in their junior year. After they married, they decided they wanted a family, but learned that they wouldn’t be able to conceive naturally. They then went through two failed adoptions.

Then, one day in August of 2015, they received a phone call about two foster sisters who needed a home. That same day, they also learned of a woman who was pregnant with twin girls who had chosen the Carlings to be their adopted parents.

A little over a year later, in October of 2016, both of the adoptions were finalized within 24 hours of each other. Kaley wrote on Reddit, “Our journey to get to this point has been anything but easy; health issues, infertility, failed adoptions, death. Heartbreak. We are here to give hope to those in a similar situation to persevere, to push through. When you feel like giving up, don’t. It will all be worth it in the end.”

She adopted her best friend's four daughters

Elizabeth Diamond and Laura Ruffino met when they were five years old, growing up together in Buffalo, New York. Then, when Diamond was just 40 years old, and raising four daughters on her own, tragedy struck. Diamond was diagnosed with stage 4 brain cancer. She was afraid that after she died, her girls would have nowhere to go, asking Ruffino and her husband Rico to adopt them.

Ruffino, who also had two daughters, promised that she would adopt Diamond’s girls and raise them as her own, telling the New York Daily News, “I told her we would talk about her every day and her girls would know her and remember her.”

When Diamond died nine months later, Ruffino stepped in and adopted the girls. She told Inside Edition, “We had a conversation and I told them that their real mom, who is the best mom ever, is in heaven, but while they’re on earth, I will be their earth mom.” Rico added, “I want to raise them the way they need to be raised and care for them as much as I humanly possibly can.”

“I never thought you could love someone else’s kids the way you love yours,” Ruffino said. “And we do.”

Families come in all shapes and sizes

All of these adoption stories are different. Some couples find that they can’t conceive and long for their adopted babies. Others already have large families and welcome needy children into their homes. Still other stories show teens recognizing the loving adults who raised them as their true parents. Even though these families come in all different shapes and sizes, one thing remains constant — their huge hearts, and their palpable love for each other, knows no bounds.

Tinashe granted restraining order against obsessed fan

The singer just had a really scary experience with a fan.

TMZ reports that Tinashe, 24, was granted a restraining order against 25-year-old fan Martin Murphy. According to a frightened Tinashe, Murphy believes that they’re married. In court documents obtained by the celeb gossip site, Tinashe claims that Murphy drove from Boston, Mass. to Los Angeles, Calif. in June 2017 and wound up near the house she shares with her parents. She also alleges that Murphy is in the process of trying to reinstate his Massachusetts license to carry a firearm, which reportedly has her fearing for her safety.

Murphy’s father seems to be on Tinashe’s side and wants to keep his son far away from the celebrity. According to TMZ, he said that Tinashe is in danger, as his son “suffered a psychotic break and is unable to distinguish reality from fantasy.”

Murphy’s been ordered to stay at least 100 yards from Tinashe and her parents, the Daily Mail reports.

Unfortunately, Tinashe isn’t the only celeb to face danger from fans. Here are a few stars who’ve had super scary stalkers.

Tom Felton won’t be a series regular on The Flash season 4

The Flash is losing one of its series regulars for its upcoming fourth season. Entertainment Weekly reports that Harry Potter star Tom Felton will not return as a regular for The CW series when it goes back on the air in the fall.

Felton joined the show in its third season as Julian Albert, Barry’s (Grant Gustin) new CSI lab partner following his adventures in time travel. While Julian did spend some time accidentally carrying out the bidding of Savitar, he still ended up finding himself a spot on Team Flash– and a spot in Caitlin’s (Danielle Panabaker) heart.

While Julian showed no signs of leaving Team Flash at the end of season three, he will apparently have lost his spot on the team by the time the events of season four pick up, six months following the finale which saw Barry get trapped in the Speed Force. Felton didn’t give a reason for his departure to EW, and the outlet also says that he does not have any upcoming appearances booked for the show. However, it’s still possible that he could return at some point in the future, should his scheduling and the show’s story allow it.

Felton will next find himself starring in Daisy Ridley’s Ophelia; he also recently appeared opposite Pretty Little Liars actress Troian Bellisario in Feed. The announcement about his departure comes shortly after some some major additions to the Flash cast, including Neil Sandilands as season four villain The Thinker, Kim Engelbrecht as his right-hand woman The Mechanic, and Danny Trejo as Breacher, a feared bounty hunter and the over-protective father of Gypsy (Jessica Camacho).

While Felton’s departure is definitely disappointing, The Flash‘s fourth season still looks like it is sure to be a hit. The series will return on Oct. 10; for now, see how the show’s characters should really look based on the comics.

The untold truth of the modeling world

The untold truth of the modeling world

For many people, the life of a model seems to be an ideal one. You get to travel the world, wear designer clothes, all while making a lot of money. But the lifestyle of a model is not all glitz and glamour. There is a lot that goes on when the cameras aren’t flashing that might shock anyone who isn’t familiar with the modeling world. Here are some things you may not know about the modeling world.

    It can be incredibly boring

While it may look like models are living the high life, it’s not always as exciting and fast-paced as you would expect. Rachel Woods, a model and the author of The Model’s Guide, told Marie Claire that models need to have a lot of patience. A lot of time is spent “waiting around.” There’s a lot of downtime, she said, “whether that’s waiting to get your hair or makeup done, waiting for the photographer to set up, waiting to get your photos back, waiting for runway shows to start or waiting to be seen at castings.”

    The pay isn't great

If you’re looking to break into modeling so you can earn big bucks, you’ll likely be disappointed. Jessica Schiffer, a former model and a contributing editor at Who What Wear said that the income of most models is meager.

According to Schiffer, “The only models who truly make money are the supermodels — otherwise you’re in debt to your agency, who fronts the fees for test shoots, clothes for castings, model apartments, and daily spending money, and then deducts it from whatever laughable income you make.”

CNNMoney reports that wages in this “cutthroat industry” often are not enough to make ends meet and that “many aspiring and working models earn unlivable pay and end up indebted to their agencies.” One model interviewed, Emily Fox, has modeled internationally but still reports making less than $20,000 a year most years.

Women earn more money than men

If you’re a man trying to make it big in the modeling world, your prospects are even worse. Modeling is one of the few industries where women earn more money than men, on average. Elizabeth Rose, a modeling agent, told BBC that the pay gap between men and women is huge and “unfair.” According to Rose, male models earn just a fraction of what women make, making up to 75 percent less.

“The top ten female models all make millions,” said Rose. “Only the top three male models make over a million.” She says that this trend is starting to change, but that it has persisted for so long because advertisers claim “women spend more money on female products,” making the industry more lucrative for female models.

Breaking into the industry can be expensive

Not only is it difficult to earn good money as a model, but getting into the industry often requires a lot of cash in start-up costs. Model Melinda Parrish wrote in HuffPost that building up your portfolio with test shoots can cost a pretty penny, with each one costing “anywhere from $200 to upwards of $1,000.” While some agencies might front the money for these test shoots, you’ll still be required to pay them back once you start booking paying gigs. She recommends that prospective models should save up at least $10,000 before launching their careers.

Most models have a side hustle

Because of the difficulties in earning steady money as a model, many models have other jobs. Parrish says that “most models…don’t actually pay all of their bills through modeling” and that many of these people “have their living expenses covered in other ways but also model.”

She advises those who are about to embark on a career as a model to make sure “that you’re set up to take care of yourself financially before you begin.”

The less prestigious gigs tend to be more lucrative

Ashley Mears, an assistant sociology professor at Boston University and the author of Pricing Beauty: The Making of a Fashion Model is a former model who told NPR what the life of a working model is actually like. While “high-end” work, such as “fashion week catwalks,” and “editorial spreads in…a high-end magazine,” might be prestigious, the pay is better doing what she calls “low prestige kind of work.”

This sort of work often involves modeling for catalogs and doing “showroom work,” modeling directly for designers “who use their bodies to mold garments upon them.” While “showroom models really don’t get any visibility,” they can earn from $200 to $500 an hour. Contrast this with “the more editorial end of the market” such as “shooting for a high-end editorial magazine” which may only pay $150 for a day’s work or nothing at all.

Modeling agencies often charge huge fees

Models are typically considered to be independent contractors, according to CNNMoney, which means that “they usually aren’t guaranteed to receive minimum wage, overtime, lunch breaks, prompt paychecks or many other protections that are common in the workplace.” Modeling agencies typically earn commissions of 20 percent or more, which further diminishes what can can already be a small paycheck. Models also “have to foot the bill for business expenses,” which can include plane tickets, housing, and promotional materials.

The fees charged by modeling agencies mean that many models are living in near-poverty. One model claims that he only pocketed $15 after a $500 shoot. This is standard in the modeling industry and can “make it..difficult—and in some cases, impossible—to get ahead.”

    There's a lack of diversity

There is a staggering lack of diversity in the modeling industry, although this is slowly improving. According to The Fashion Spot, models featured in 2016’s spring ad campaigns were overwhelmingly white, with non-white models accounting for just 21.8 percent of models cast in the 236 fashion campaigns surveyed. Statistics are even worse for plus-size models. Out of 440 models, just seven were over a size 12, and all of them were white.

Many scouts find models on Instagram

While breaking into the modeling industry can be a grueling process, modern technology is slowly starting to change how new models are discovered. Modeling scouts are finding that Instagram can be a great place to find new talent “from the comfort of their couch,” reports Forbes.

Instagram has proven to be a game-changer for the modeling industry. IMG Models launched a campaign to scout models from Instagram, and signed 55 models from 16 different countries. Ivan Bart, President of IMG Models, offered tips for those looking to be discovered on Instagram. “Take the most natural, effortless beauty pictures…just be yourself.”

Computer avatars could replace human models in the future

We might see computer avatars slowly taking over the runways in the not-so-distant future. Researchers at Manchester Metropolitan University are working on “hybrid avatars” that could one day “replace…models altogether.” These “near-faultless copies of people” will likely change the future of the modeling industry and “can be digitally dressed in the latest haute couture and their movements recorded, ready to instantly appear in Milan or Paris.”

While the research is fascinating, models should not worry that they will be out of a job…yet. One of the researchers, Andrew Brownridge, told i-D that the technology will more likely just make the jobs of models easier. Models wearing motion capture suits would “perform the motion” which would then be shown to the audience by the avatar. “Therefore, the model would not need to change outfits between walks, only the character or outfit would need to be changed within the virtual environment,” said Brownridge.

Modeling is a lot of hard work

Like any job, the modeling industry has its pros and cons. There are some great things about modeling, but don’t be mistaken in thinking that the job doesn’t require a lot of hard work. Those who make it big in the modeling world are few and far between, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t success stories. As with any other career, it takes hard work and dedication to make it to the top.

He is most famous for his speech “I have a dream” and became the winner in 1964 in the recognition of his role as a figurehead of the “anti-segregation movements” in America and “nonviolent civil rights”.

At the age of 35, he became the youngest man to have received the Nobel prize and donated all his award money for the civil rights movement.

    2. Nelson Mandela

South Africa’s most famous civil rights pioneer and the former president was nominated for the Nobel prize(1993) for his tremendous work to end the apartheid regime.

Mandela shared the award with Frederik Willem de Klerk, the president who released him from the jail and lifted the ban on his “anti-apartheid ANC party”, paving the road for the new constitution.

“Where, after all, do universal human rights begin? In small places, close to home – so close and so small that they cannot be seen on any maps of the world. … Unless these rights have meaning there, they have little meaning anywhere. Without concerned citizen action to uphold them close to home, we shall look in vain for progress in the larger world.” – Eleanor Roosevelt

    3. Mother Teresa

She was born as Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu in Skopje(1910). She was also the founder of the “Missionaries of Charity” and won 1979 award for her humanitarian work caring for the neediest in the slums of Kolkata.

In spite of with no money, she built the Christian order into a worldwide organization with the support of numerous volunteers and charitable organizations.

    4. Jimmy Carter

In 2002, the former American president was honored for his “Decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development.”

During his term as a President, he played a major role in the disarmament talks with the Soviet Union, resulting in SALT II treaty.Thereby establishing relations between the United States and China, and a number of other international peace treaties.

    5. Henry Kissinger and Le Duc Tho

One award that surprised the world was the 1973 award, given to the US Henry Kissinger, a U.S. Secretary of State, and Le Duc Tho, the key member of the North Vietnamese government, who refused the prize.

The pair, engaged in secret talks which led to a ceasefire in Vietnam, and were the controversial winners because to their respective roles in the Vietnam war, in which both sides attracted harsh criticism.

    6. Theodore Roosevelt

This American president was chosen as the winner in 1906 for successfully negotiating the peace treaty that resulted in the end of the Russo-Japanese war.

He also brought the first case before the International Court of Arbitration at The Hague, petitioning for the tribunal to fix an old dispute with Mexico on the Pious Foundations of California.

    7. Aung San Suu Kyi

This Burmese freedom warrior won the award in 1991 for her incredible recognition of leading role in the non-violent movement for human rights and democracy in Burma.

She was also elected as prime minister in 1990, however, was prevented from taking the charge of office by the military. Aung San has spent more than eleven of the past 19 years in various forms of detention, and at present is under house arrest. But she is seen as the crucial hope for ending military repression in Burma.

    8. Al Gore

The former US vice president was awarded in 2007 for his tremendous effort to raise awareness about environmental issues and climate change, particularly through his documentary, “An Inconvenient Truth”.

Explaining their decision, the nominating committee explained that the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and Mr. Gore, with whom he shared the award, were assisting the world in preventing future disputes across the world.

    9. Mikhail Gorbachev

He was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990 for his magnificent role in the peace process between the Soviet Union and America that later ended the cold war.

His prize – which had previously given to Polish trade union leader Lech Walesa and political dissident Andrei Sakharov attracted much controversy since it was seen by many within the Soviet Union as a potential ideological weapon of the western nations.

    10. Kofi Annan

Shared the 2001 award with the United Nations, of which he was also the  secretary general, for their humanitarian “work for a better organized and more peaceful world.”

This prize was also debated because many saw as the UN’s failure to avoid mass killings in Serbia and Rwanda, and Annan’s failure to withstand up to U.S. and to other western powers.

Jordan Klepper’s Comedy Central series gets a premiere date

We finally have a little bit more information about the format of Jordan Klepper’s upcoming Comedy Central late-night show. According to Entertainment Weekly, the show will be titled The Opposition With Jordan Klepper and will look to “satirize the hyperbolic, conspiracy-laden noise machine that is the alternative-media landscape on both the right and left.”

The show will hit the airwaves on Sept. 25 at 11:30 p.m., taking over the slot formerly occupied by The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore. Wilmore was the last to try to revitalize the 11:30 p.m. slot, which successfully launched Stephen Colbert’s The Colbert Report; however, his show was canceled last August due to declining viewership.

Klepper joined The Daily Show back in 2014, when Jon Stewart was still hosting. A fan-favorite for his hilarious field pieces, Klepper already had experience behind the desk when he was given his own show, having filled it for Trevor Noah last October. Comedy Central previously described the goal of his new show as looking to “embrace and define the chaos of our country by channeling Klepper’s steadfast attitude that institutions are to be trusted less than the lies of the mainstream media.”

Comedy Central’s late-night is currently in flux, with Chris Hardwick’s @midnight recently getting canceled. However, they have found success with Anthony Atamanuik’s The President Show, which recently Variety reports was recently given an order for seven additional episodes. The show, which currently occupies the 11:30 p.m. time slot on Thursdays, will move to midnight when Klepper’s series premieres.

Now that Klepper’s show has a title, a premiere date, and a description, we should start hearing more about it soon. For now, read up on the untold truth of The Daily Show.

Frank Sinatra’s wife, Barbara, dead at 90

Barbara Sinatra, wife to the legendary singer Frank Sinatra, has passed away.

The Desert Sun reports that Barbara died in her Rancho Mirage, Calif. home on Tuesday, July 25, 2017. She had reportedly endured months of “declining health” prior to her death. Fox News adds that Barbara’s passing was due to natural causes. She was 90 years old.

A representative of Barbara’s charitable organization the Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center—which exists to aid victims of abuse—said (via the Desert Sun), “She died comfortably surrounded by family and friends at her home.”

Barbara, a former model, was Frank’s fourth and final wife. They first connected while she was married to her second husband, Zeppo Marx. After divorcing Marx, she later married Frank in 1976. Frank and Barbara remained married until the “Fly Me to the Moon” singer passed away in 1998, spending nearly 22 years together—making their relationship the longest of any of Frank’s previous three marriages.

USA Today notes that a funeral for Barbara is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 1.

Barbara is survived by her son Robert Marx and his daughter.

Our thoughts are with Barbara’s loved ones at this time.

What the cast of 10 Things I Hate About You looks like today

What the cast of 10 Things I Hate About You looks like today

10 Things I Hate About You is one of the all-time greatest teen movies. It might even be the greatest, depending on who you’re talking to (I say yes). It’s the best Shakespearean adaptation (in spite of how wonderful Clueless is), it’s still just as funny and cool today as it was back when it first came out, and it continues to be just as important to those who embraced it in their younger years as they mature into adults.

Given it’s been almost 20 years since its release in 1999, now is the perfect time to take a look back at the stars of this joy of a movie and ask the question, where are they now? Some are still working pretty consistently in show-business, others have backed away from the spotlight, and one of them is running a, er, spiritual group out of a temple in Venice Beach, CA. Read on to find out which cast-members emerged as true stars and remember the one who, sadly, is no longer with us.

    Julia Stiles (Kat)

The chick who stole all of our hearts as bad-ass, no-nonsense Kat Stratford (introduced in the opening sequence blasting Joan Jett’s “Bad Reputation” out of her unbelievably cool red vintage car, before arriving at school and tearing a poster for Prom off the wall), made us want to wear nothing but low-rise sweat-pants and camo string tops for the rest of our natural born lives. Julia Stiles has been working steadily since her breakout role.

Stiles starred in the hugely successful Bourne franchise, opposite Matt Damon, as tough-cookie agent Nicky Parsons, as well as headlining another couple of teen favorites, including Down To You with Freddie Prinze Jr., and Save The Last Dance with Sean Patrick Thomas. She’s made several appearances on TV over the years, too, most notably in The Mindy Project, where she got to flex her comedy chops. Stiles is currently starring in Neil Jordan’s lush, Sky Atlantic TV miniseries Riviera, as grieving widow Georgina, who sets out to find her husband’s killer after he mysteriously passes away. Naturally, she brings much of that familiar Kat Stratford attitude to another strong-woman-in-crisis role.

    Heath Ledger (Patrick)

If impressionable audience-members wanted to be Julia Stiles in 10 Things, then we definitely wanted to date her paramour in the movie, the dashing Patrick Verona (played by Heath Ledger). A high school student who’d achieved legendary status by allegedly eating a live duck (everything except the beak and feet), selling his own liver on the black market for a new set of speakers, and missing a year of school thanks to doing time in San Quentin, the most startling thing about Patrick was how sweet and kind he turned out to be.

Ledger soared to mainstream success following his knockout performance in the role, most notably taking on the iconic character of The Joker in Christopher Nolan’s celebrated and cerebral superhero movie, The Dark Knight. His career was cut short, however, when, in 2008, Ledger was found dead of an accidental drug overdose. He was awarded a well-deserved posthumous Oscar for his final role (let’s just pretend The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus didn’t happen).

    Joseph Gordon Levitt (Cameron)

As weird as it seems nowadays, Joseph Gordon Levitt was arguably the most well-known young star in the 10 Things cast back in 1999, thanks to his long career as a child actor — most memorably in 3rd Rock From The Sun, opposite John Lithgow. Levitt’s “I burn, I pine, I perish” proclamation made him a mini-heartthrob in training and, although the hunk of the movie is clearly Patrick, the doting Cameron is a dream boyfriend in his own right.

Much like Stiles and Ledger, Levitt ascended to the A-list in the following years, with high-profile roles in rom-coms (500 Days Of Summer), big-budget action flicks (G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra), and sci-fi thinkers (Looper), along with two collaborations with Christopher Nolan on Inception and The Dark Knight Rises. There was even a suggestion, in the latter, that he might take up the bat-cowl at some stage. Levitt also made his directorial debut in 2013 with the well-received Don Jon, in which he also starred as a sex addict opposite heavy-hitters Scarlett Johansson and Julianne Moore.

    Larisa Oleynik (Bianca)

Another TV stalwart was Alex Mack herself, Larisa Oleynik, who, along with Levitt (whom she actually appeared alongside on 3rd Rock From The Sun), had carved out a successful career on the small screen before bratty Bianca established her as a serious film actor. 10 Things was a real growing-up moment for Oleynik, who up until that point was more familiar to audiences as tomboy Mack-in-a-hat, or even cherubic Dawn from The Babysitters Club.

Her growth into a serious actor continued after the movie, mostly on TV, with take-notice turns in the likes of Pretty Little Liars, Hawaii Five-O, and Mad Men, along with voice work on the super-popular Winx Club animated series. But a return to movies may be imminent as, at the time of writing, IMDb lists three movies in post-production for Oleynik, including a horror and an indie coming-of-ager involving two siblings meeting after several years apart. Is bratty Bianca about to make a comeback?

    David Krumholtz (Michael)

Michael!? David Krumholtz is 10 Things‘ secret sweetheart, romancing Mandella (played by Susan May Pratt) via her love of Shakespeare, and unconvincingly playing the part of a not-nerd in a doomed attempt to impress Cameron when he first meets him and pretends not to be an “audio visual geek.” Eagle-eyed viewers would’ve recognized the young actor from his hilarious turn in Addams Family Values, as Wednesday’s wannabe paramour, Joel Glicker, who morphs into a mini Gomez at the end of the movie only for her to cruelly spurn his advances. Rather than his first foray into showbiz, Values was just one of several jobs Krumholtz had as a child actor, appearing in everything from The Closer to Chicago Sons.

These days, he’s keeping busy back on TV, including on Mom (opposite his 10 Things buddy Allison Janney), The Good Wife, and The League. Krumholtz has also appeared in a variety of movie roles including, most memorably, as the voice of Lavash in Sausage Party. He previously collaborated with buddy Seth Rogen on This Is The End while the Coen brothers cast him in their Hollywood farce Hail, Caesar! Clearly, if Michael/Joel is anything to go by, geeks will inherit the Earth.

    Andrew Keegan (Joey)

10 Things I Hate About You didn’t want for teen heartthrobs. And, although Heath Ledger was the clear breakout (with weedy JGL a close second), it was buff Andrew Keegan who was the real teen dream. When the movie dropped, he’d already made sultry appearances in Baywatch, Boy Meets World, Sabrina The Teenage Witch, 7th Heaven and Party Of Five. Super-stardom surely beckoned.

Aside from Ledger, who died, Keegan’s career trajectory might be the weirdest and most unexpected out of everybody. Although his IMDb lists a few projects currently in development, the actor is now mostly known for, well, starting a cult. Maybe cult is the wrong word. Keegan is co-founder of the “community spiritual center” called Full Circle, located in Venice Beach.

He made headlines recently for a super-weird interview with Vulture, in which he discussed, among other things, planting a rose quartz crystal in the ground to manifest his own following (it worked). He seems fairly happy with his lot, as a 36-year-old man in a temple with a group of people chanting that they love him. He has even been open about how he doesn’t think his previous, heartthrob self was fulfilling who he truly is as a person (although he also admitted in the interview that the acting roles dried up around the same time he came to this realization). So, really, who are we to judge, provided he’s not hurting anyone? The interviewer noted he still has a hot bod, so at least that’s something.

    Susan May Pratt (Mandella)

Like several other entrants on this list, 10 Things was Susan May Pratt’s big, breakout role as a young actor. Starring as the grumpy-but-sweet Mandella, she made an impression opposite Stiles’ prickly Kat as her less-highly-strung friend (not much of an accomplishment, but still). Her burgeoning romance with Michael was super-sweet too, not least because it doesn’t really blossom until the very end of the movie.

The role led to several big moments for Pratt, with her starring opposite Melissa Joan Hart (then at the height of her fame) in Drive Me Crazy, before taking, well, center-stage in Center Stage with a then-largely-unknown Zoe Saldana. A variety of bit parts followed, mostly in TV, including on CSI, Masters Of Sex and Mad Men, while a starring turn in Open Water 2: Adrift introduced her to the world of horror, leading to a role in Joel Edgerton’s hugely popular directorial debut, The Gift. She’s set to take center-stage once more in the upcoming Act Super Naturally.

    Gabrielle Union (Chastity)

Like David Krumholtz, Gabrielle Union turned her role as “the friend” into gold, as mean girl Chastity. She also has the honour of bursting Bianca’s bubble at the Prom, gleefully telling her exactly what Joey was really up to the whole time. It turns out the actor is just as vocal in real life (albeit, with less of a cruel slant); Union, a proud civil rights activist, has been a proponent for African American rights and a staunch supporter of sexual assault victims over the past few years, using her platform to speak out about her own rape and personal experiences with racism (particularly when it comes to being offered roles).

She’s also worked steadily since 10 Things, starring as a rival cheerleader in the teen classic Bring It On with Kirsten Dunst, as a basketball hopeful in Love & Basketball, an Instagram-obsessed reality star in Chris Rock’s Top Five and a tortured slave in The Birth Of A Nation, to name just a few. Her most recent role, opposite Jamie Foxx in Sleepless, further highlighted Union’s ability to light up the screen while simultaneously making even the most thinly-written roles her own.

    Larry Miller (Walter)

It takes a strong actor to make his mark in a teen movie like 10 Things I Hate About You. Adults are usually relegated to the angry parent roles, but in Walter Stratford, so memorably played by veteran actor Larry Miller, a well of hilarious over-reactions was discovered. Kat and Bianca’s father has some of the funniest moments in the movie, from thinking seven reps on an ab machine is “good” to espousing the truth about a pregnant teen who would’ve had more thoughtful things to say if she wasn’t “so doped up.”

Miller later starred on the short-lived (and best left forgotten) TV spin-off the same name, but that didn’t stop him popping up elsewhere including in Shane Black’s cult favourite Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, as stylist extraordinaire Paolo in The Princess Diaries 1 and 2, meddling Tommy in 8 Simple Rules, and a dopey CIA agent in Get Smart. It’s unsurprising he’s found voice-over work too, providing his pipes for Bee Movie and The Penguins Of Madagascar series. Lately, though, he’s heading back to school as the Dean in movie Rock Steady Row (in post at the time of writing) and the principal in TV mini-series High School Cupid, a Cupid Inc. Story. Fitting, considering how hard he was on his girls in 10 Things. Hell is just a sauna, after all.

    Daryl Mitchell (Mr. Morgan)

If there was one person who could stand to go toe-to-toe with the terrifying Kat Stratford (even her father cowered), it was well-meaning English teacher Mr. Morgan. Already a TV vet by the time 10 Things came around, actor Daryl Mitchell has appeared on everything from The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air to The John Larroquette Show.

He’s made a home for himself on TV in the following years, aside from the odd appearance in comedies such as Galaxy Quest and Black Knight. You can currently find Mitchell on NCIS: New Orleans, playing a wheelchair-bound character after a real 2001 spinal cord injury following a motorcycle accident. He’s previously shown up on Desperate Housewives, Veronica’s Closet, Wizards Of Waverley Place, just to name a few.

    Allison Janney (Ms. Perky)

Allison Janney was already a legend of the stage and screen before 10 Things came along, but that didn’t make her turn as the hilariously candid Ms. Perky any less of a joy. She followed it up with eye-catching roles in Drop Dead Gorgeous and American Beauty before making a serious name for herself across seven must-watch seasons of The West Wing.

Janney has stuck to TV in the years since, most prominently starring opposite Anna Faris as a hilariously mismatched mother-daughter duo on hit sitcom Mom. She also made her hugely welcome teen movie return as lead character Bianca’s spunky divorcee mother in the brilliant The DUFF back in 2015. Still no word on whether Ms. Perky ever finished her erotic novel, mind you.

    Kyle Cease (Bogey Lowenstein)

No 10 Things I Hate About You discussion would be complete without luckless (but super-rich) Bogey Lowenstein. He may have been a bit of a mystery at Padua High (not to mention Michael’s sworn enemy), but the actor who played him, Kyle Cease, is anything but shy. A Seattle native (where the movie was set and predominantly filmed), his focus following the flick was comedy, with two Comedy Central specials airing in 2006 and 2009 (he later rated #1 on Comedy Central’s Standup Showdown that same year.)

These days, however, Cease works as a motivational speaker, touring across America under the umbrella of his video series Evolving Out Loud (he’s got a knack for to-camera presentations), which incorporates his funny bone. He’s even written a book, entitled I Hope I Screw This Up. Cease hasn’t dipped his toe into the showbiz world in a few years, but he did have a memorable turn as the slow-clapper in Not Another Teen Movie, a clever nod to his Lowenstein character.

    Just the beginning

Back in 1999, there was no knowing how much of an impact 10 Things I Hate About You was about to have. The cast comprised a bunch of ex-child actors looking to make it big in a more adult way, a few well-chosen grown up performers with weight and prestige, and one Australian heartthrob-in-the-making (who was then virtually unknown).

However, it’s unsurprising, given the significant amount of talent across the board, that everyone involved has since made their mark in a big way. Really, 10 Things was just the beginning.

Neill Blomkamp to direct sci-fi thriller The Gone World

District 9 director Neill Blomkamp has been making pretty much anything he feels like lately with his Oats Studios shorts, but he also revealed that he’s got his next major project.

Blomkamp confirmed on Twitter that he’s about to begin work on an adaptation of the sci-fi novel The Gone World for 20th Century Fox. He was first attached to the project back in 2015.

Based on the novel by Thomas Sweterlitsch, The Gone World is a “time travel procedural” that’s described as Inception meets True Detective. The story centers on a special agent named Shannon Moss who investigates the murder of the family of a Navy SEAL. Moss learns that the SEAL was aboard a spaceship that disappeared into another dimension where time is warped. When Moss travels forward in time to solve the mystery, she discovers that humanity is on the verge of disaster.

No word about the cast just yet, but the movie is expected to arrive in early 2018.

It’ll be Blomkamp’s first movie since 2015’s Chappie. However, check out his recent shorts Rakka (starring Sigourney Weaver), God: Serengeti (starring Sharlto Copley), and Zygote (starring Dakota Fanning).

Until we hear more about The Gone World, find out why we never got to see a District 9 sequel.

Ciara criticized for bringing 3-month-old daughter on toboggan ride

The “1, 2 Step” singer faced some harsh backlash after she posted a video on Instagram on Monday, July 24, 2017.

Ciara has been visiting China on vacation with her family, husband Russell Wilson, son Future Zahir, and newborn daughter Sienna Princess. And while the idea of simply going out on the town so soon after giving birth is nerve wracking for some mothers, Ciara’s apparently just fine with traveling—and not just by car or plane.

Ciara shared a video of her family—with three-month old Sienna strapped to her chest—sliding down the Great Wall of China on a toboggan ride. “I wish I could put into words how fun this was! Going down in the toboggan at the #GreatWallOfChina with my family,” she captioned the clip. “Unreal!”

But Ciara’s fans weren’t too pleased with her decision to fly down the Wall with her infant. “Isn’t this too dangerous for a new born,” one commenter wrote (via Page Six).

“It may be fun but doing this with an infant to your chest is not smart at all,” another comment read.

However, some of Ciara’s followers were quick to put a stop to all the mommy shaming. “@Ciara is an amazing mother and I am sure just like you, she would never do anything to harm her kids. Or not research anything before doing it,” a supportive commenter wrote beneath the video (via Refinery29).

Another commenter noted, “They are fine and I don’t think they would have been allowed on the rides with the kids if it was not safe. I don’t see any problem here just a happy family living a happy and fun life.”

So should Ciara have brought her baby along with her on the twisty ride? Well, ultimately, it was her decision. While we admit that the video makes us a little nervous, we just have to assume that mama knows best.

John Mayer defends Justin Bieber’s tour cancellation

Justin Bieber’s apparently got a friend in John Mayer. Who would have thought?

After Bieber cancelled the 14 remaining shows of his Purpose world tour, Mayer took to Twitter to defend the 23-year-old’s decision. “When someone pulls remaining dates of a tour, it means they would have done real damage to themselves if they kept going,” Mayer, 31, told his 1 million followers.

Likely referencing the recent deaths of Chris Cornell and Chester Bennington, he added, “We’ve lost so many great artists lately. I give Justin 👍🏼👍🏼 for realizing it was time to call it. You should too.”

As Nicki Swift previously reported, Bieber ended his world tour, canceling all remaining shows, in order to unwind, it seems. When asked by a reporter what his plans were for his newfound free time, Bieber responded that he’d be “just resting, getting some relaxation,” adding that wanted to ride a bike.

All tickets for canceled shows will be refunded. E! News notes that, as of now, Bieber has no plans to reschedule the canceled tour dates.

Unfortunately for Bieber, this isn’t the first time he’s majorly disappointed fans—catch up on all the times he’s treated Beliebers like trash.
